Front-end staff can enter vitals in patient charts without the presence of a provider and without the need for a provider to sign and lock the encounter note.

For example, if patients are participating in a weight management program, staff can capture their weight from the clinic scale.

These vitals visits do not have a real provider attached to them and are not billed. Instead, they are entered as a special “vitals without provider” visit, under a specially-configured “nonprovider” (for example, named Vitals Provider). These visits appear in the list of encounters, and show the initials of the vitals provider (for example VP).

When filtering encounters, you can choose to include or exclude these vitals visits.

Before front-end staff can enter vitals, the special vitals provider must first be enabled and configured (see Configuring non-providers for vitals entry).

Steps

1. From the WorkDesk, under Data Entry, click Vitals Without Provider, and find the patient.

Tip: If the patient is already in context, right-click and choose View Vitals Entry Screen > Vitals Without Provider.

2. In the Vitals tab, enter the captured vital(s).
3. The appointment reason is automatically set to Vitals, or as defined in the configuration.

Tip: If you also entered multiple vitals during the same visit and you selected one to use, it will appear here. If you change one of those values in this window, a new Vitals Multiple is recorded and the new value is marked as Use.

4. Optionally, enter a SOAP note.
5. Click Save & Close .
