Adding patient relationships

You can enter relationships to a patient using the Relationships area in the Patient Maintenance window > Name/Addr/Phone tab.

If a patient’s family members are patients in your EMR, you can link those family members to the patient to link their family history. If a patient’s family member is not in the EMR, but is going to be a patient of the clinic, you must first add the family member as a patient, and then come back and link the family member to the patient.

You can also record other important patient contacts as relationships, such as a social worker or lawyer.You can record other important patient contacts using relationships.

And, you can define a patient's primary caregiver.

Tip: You can also define the patient’s next of kin in the Other Demographics tab of the Patient Maintenance window.

Steps

1. Search for the patient whose information you want to add a relationship to. See Searching for patients.
2. In the search results, click the patient name, and on your keyboard, press F9. The Patient Maintenance window opens.
3. In the Patient Maintenance window > Name/Adds/Phone tab, in the Relationships area, click Add/Edit. The Patient Relations window opens.
4. Click New.
5. To add relationship to a person who is also a patient in your EMR:
a) In the Related Patients area, click Search. The Patient Search window opens.
b) Type your search criteria and click Search or press Enter on your keyboard.
c) In the search results list, double-click the family member’s name. The EMR displays the family member’s name in the Related Patients area.
6. To add a relationship to a person who is not a patient in your EMR, in the Related Patients area, in the Other. field, type the person’s name.

Tip: If you enter a name in the Other field, you do not see it in the relationship table. You must click Add/Edit to see the names of contacts who are not in the EMR system.

7. in the Relation list, click the appropriate relation.
8. To define a relation as the patient’s primary caregiver, in the Relationship to area, in the Caregiver list, click Primary.

Tip: You can also view the patient’s primary caregiver in the Other Demographics tab.

9. Click Save.
